We were together. Standing with you, things felt momentarily fine, at last. You sighed in relief, and we walked for a ways. There was a tremble and then the earth beneath us cleaved in two. Instantly I was hundreds of feet below you, and there was no way back. You cried out, but I could barely hear your voice. I locked my eyes on your figure until the distance became too great and you vanished above the cliff. There’s nothing left to do but go on.
